CALM Conversations: A Workshop to Recognize and Respond to Suicide Risk
You’re invited to attend this 90-minute workshop on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 1:00PM – 2:30PM at the BVIU (147 Poplar Ave., Monaca, PA 15061). This workshop is designed to provide friends, family, and others with information on how to recognize and respond to suicide risk. It also focuses on reducing access to lethal means, especially firearms. Participants learn how to talk with someone who may be having thoughts of suicide in a collaborative, nonjudgmental, and supportive manner.
Summary: CALM (Conversations on Access to Lethal Means) is a suicide prevention training that encourages the safe storage of lethal means (firearms and medications) during a suicidal crisis. By temporarily putting time and distance between a suicidal person and highly lethal means, a life may be saved. CALM: Counseling on Access to Lethal Means was originally created as a workshop designed for mental health professionals.
Intended Audience: All communities of interest in suicide prevention
Workshop participants will learn:
-
Basic facts and misconceptions about suicide, common risk factors and warning signs, and the importance of means safety in keeping at-risk individuals safe
-
How to ask about mood and suicide
-
How to provide support to at-risk individuals
-
How to make the environment safer for an at-risk individual until their mood improves
This workshop is sponsored by the Beaver County Zero Suicide Initiative.
